Ensuring Clients Achieve Value

Clerks of Works

The title ‘Clerk of Works' has been in existence since the medieval period and is given to an experienced construction practitioner who is responsible for the superintendence of the construction of buildings.

Briefly their function is to:-

  • Inspect in detail
  • Report concisely
  • Interpret clearly
  • Record completely

Our Service

By the systematic and vigilant inspection of construction works in progress and with particular regard to the elements of workmanship and materials and progress.  Our aim is to pro-actively assist the client, contractor and design team to realise a 'Zero Defects' project.

By instilling a quality ethos, costly delays in affecting handover are significantly reduced producing a quality product that is 'Right First Time'.

Clerk of Works, Independent (Third Party), Site Inspection & Quality Control

This discipline compliments the Chartered Surveying Division in that it provides sound technical support to the management functions at both pre and post contract stages of a construction project.

Site Control Quality Inspection and Clerk of Works Services focus on the value aspect of quality and may be implemented at inception through to the life of the structure.

This discipline ensures that projects are constructed to the highest standard and comply with current Building Regulations legislation, British Standards and Codes of Practice.

Other services in this domain include: -

  • Project Progress Reports & Records (Both Audio Visual & Photographic)
  • Site Inspection & Reporting
  • Defects Liability Re-inspections
  • Quality Control Inspections
  • On Site, Environmental Inspections

Benefits of John Burke Associations Independent Third Party Inspections

Independent Site Inspectors (Clerks of Works) provide reassurance and peace of mind that construction projects conform to client expectations and recognised workmanship standards.  They monitor conditions that works are carried out to ensure an environment that is conducive to producing a quality product.

They witness tests to verify that the works meet specified standard requirements.  They monitor progress against programme so that an independent view of where the Project is at any given stage is measured against the contractors own assessment.  By providing an ongoing monitoring process, they are able to advise on all aspects of the works in progress and highlight any concerns and risks.

It is well known in the construction Industry that the presence of an Independent Third Party Inspector maintains the contractor's focus on quality and ensures that quality issues are mitigated at an early stage.  In addition to site based works, the Independent Third Party Inspector will also comment upon buildability and design issues, design team performance and contribute to both site and technical meetings, as required.

Environmental Inspection

Our ongoing site Inspection Process can be extended to include inspection and comment on various environmental issues.  At present these include (but are not confined to) the following:-

  • Recycling of Waste Material & Products
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Site Logistics & Ergonomics
  • Materials Management
  • Sustainability
  • Transport & Labour Resources

Generally, John Burke Associates incorporate the client's environmental policy and expectations within the project quality plan in order to monitor compliance and adherence to standards.
